Social Media Addiction – Is It Real?
Are you spending so many waking hours connected to social media sites that you often worry if you suffer from a social media addiction? If so, you’re not alone.
Perhaps it’s due to the fact that I’m basically an introvert and prefer to be productive rather than social that this has not affected me the way it has many of my clients and students. Just today I observed how much I was able to accomplish because I receive no notifications from any social media sites while I am working. In the time it takes to scroll through my updates, “like” or comment on someone’s thread, watch a two minute video, search for my own funny video, see whose birthday is today, and so on and so forth I have…
* Written an update email to my permission based list of prospects and clients
* Repurposed this email into a blog post on the concept of “publish or perish” for entrepreneurs
* Written five hundred words towards my new book on “Living the Mentored Life”
* Almost completed the sales copy for my new online course on authority blogging
My motto when it comes to social media is…”Get In, Get Out, and Get Back to Work!”
Can you see now why I feel this way? If you’re telling yourself you are seriously in business as an online entrepreneur, be willing to do the work and put in the time.
From the time that social media sites were available, between 2007 and 2008 for most of them, I have given myself a strict schedule and guideline: I spend no more than fifteen minutes in any given twenty-four hour period on social media, I never log in to my accounts before noon because my prime time hours are in the mornings, and I schedule or have an assistant posting most everything that is for marketing purposes. When I do log in to make an update or see what the people I know are doing, it’s typically in the evening after I’ve eaten dinner and prepared for the following day. I believe this has eliminated the possibility that I will end up with a social media addiction that could be detrimental to my bottom line.
Dealing With a Social Media Addiction
So, what must you do if this is a serious issue for you? Here are my recommendations:
- Log in to each of your accounts and see what it is exactly that is attracting you to that site
- Look at the clock and write down how much time you typically spend on social media
- Create a schedule that will allow you to stay connected with others while also getting work done
It breaks my heart to see people I know spend so much time on a site they have no control over and not working on projects that can bring in some income right now. Don’t allow this to happen to you.
