Do you find yourself suffering from writer’s block? Writer’s block is the term we all use when we just don’t have any ideas for what to write. I had heard about this when I first came online in 2006, but then forgot about it as I began to write. When I took a closer look I realized that no one had to go through this process of not being able to write; instead, it was simply a matter of getting into the writing habit on a daily basis.
I was a classroom teacher for twenty years, and most of my students spoke English as a second language. Their home language was Spanish, Tagalog, Armenian, Chinese, or any of a host of other languages. While this made for an interesting cultural diversity in the classroom, it also meant that teaching them how to write was going to be even more difficult than with teaching native English speakers.
The goal was to get them into the habit of writing every single day, including on weekends and during school vacations. I told them that if they were willing to write for twenty minutes each day, they would become skilled writers. It worked! The kids who were willing to do this began writing beautiful essays and stories, and after about a month could not even remember why it had been so difficult to think of what to write and how to write it in a way that got their message across to their reader.
What was truly interesting was that during this time I did no writing of my own. I had been discouraged from writing by people who were critical of me while I was still in college. Instead of taking my own advice, I did not write for more than twenty years. Once I came online, I realized that writing was going to be the single most important work activity each day. I started writing for twenty minutes each day, and soon that became an hour as I began to blog and to write articles on my topics to build my business.
Start by writing about topics that are of interest to you. This will always be the best way to eliminate writer’s block forever. We all want to talk and write about what we love, so do just that. You will find that within about a month you will have developed the writing habit, and will be able to write each day to build your business and create an unlimited amount of content.
