Have you thought about working from home on the computer? Being able to work from the comfort of your own home definitely has its advantages. You can make your own hours, giving you the freedom to sleep late, take your kids to school, make breakfast for your spouse, or do any of a number of things you might not be able to do if you are working at a traditional job. In fact, you will find that you can be more productive than ever because you will soon figure out what works best for you.
When I was a classroom teacher my day begin before five in the morning. Everything was rushed each morning as I showered, dressed, ate breakfast, got my things together, and got out the door before six. Then I would sit in traffic for forty-five minutes before arriving at school. The weekends were also busy for me because that’s when I was working in real estate as a broker and residential appraiser. I longed for a time when I could get up when I felt like it and have a leisurely morning at home as I prepared for my day.
When I finally resigned from teaching and gave away my real estate clients to come online in 2005, that’s when I realized for the first time in my life that I’m a morning person. All of those years that I had dreaded getting up so early and leaving the house was because I wanted to stay home and work, not be away from home for twelve hours or longer each day and work. Working from home sounded perfect for me!
Now I get up around seven thirty or eight, take my dogs outside, and go back upstairs to meditate and relax for a half an hour before going to my computer. It’s a joyous time for me and I typically write for a couple of hours (it’s just after nine in the morning as I’m writing this post), check email, and then take a look at which activities I will be involved in for the day. Today I have my Rotary Club meeting at noon, and then I will be spending some time with a friend before going back home around dinner time.
The amazing thing is that I now earn about three times as much money as I did when I was working in the “real” world. My productivity has skyrocketed, while my stress level is at its lowest in my adult life.
You can do this, or something similar, if you are willing to spend the first year putting all of your systems in place. By this I mean that you need to choose a niche, set up a blog, and start serving others with your knowledge and skills. I’m still a teacher, just not in the classroom. What can you teach, write about, and create products around that will allow you to teach your topic to others?
The Internet has changed our world forever, and being able to work from home on the computer is just one example of how you can change your life this year.
2020 Update: Why My Morning Routine Had to Change for Working at Home
When I started this business in 2006 my goal was to replace the income I was earning full time as a classroom teacher and part-time with my real estate business. I had gone from earning $125k to $150k a year by working 60 to 70 hours a week, at least 50 weeks each year to being at home in front of my computer earning nothing, zero, nada, zilch.
That’s right, when I began this online marketing dream I had no idea how to replace my income. Every morning I woke up around eight or so and turned on my computer to read emails from people who were making an excellent living, searching for ideas on how I could go from earning nothing, zip, nil, nought to something – anything.
Over the next couple of hours I would beat myself up psychologically and remind myself of all the reasons I couldn’t do what others were doing. Then I would frantically post to a few of my blogs (I had about a dozen, in case one niche didn’t work out for me and I would write until my two index fingers (I am still not a touch typist) were worn out.
Can You Imagine This Working From Home Scenario?
Then I took on a Mentor and everything changed. He taught me how to be prepared for my mornings by starting the night before. I created a dynamic “to-do” list where I knew exactly what I needed to accomplish each day. I shut down ten of the twelve blogs, wrote an eBook about real estate farming, created a product on article marketing, and began helping local businesses by setting up blogs and writing articles for them.
Another thing I learned from being mentored is that my morning routine was crucial to my level of success. These days I arise between four and four thirty at least four days each week and this gives me time for myself before I begin writing at five.
Each morning I told myself that I could achieve anything I wanted with my new business. I spoke out loud and said things like “Connie, you are going to help many people today” and “You know, Connie that there are people who need to hear your message and can only hear it from you” and more. The result? I replaced my previous income within 18 months and kept increasing it. I currently (2020) earn more than thirteen times a year what I earned as a classroom teacher and working part-time in real estate.
Look closely at what you are doing each morning. Set a fixed time to get up, as early as possible. Look at your to-do list (created and updated the night before) and then do some things for yourself before doing anything for your business. I read, stretch, write, meditate, walk, and daydream each morning. This sets the tone for my day and insures I’ll be able to serve many others throughout the day and accomplish my goals. You can do this. You deserve this. Your life experience will be enhanced because of it.

I am a morning person and I love Mondays. There. I said it.
Isn’t it amazing how everything in your world changes once you’re able to work from home and you get to pick your best hours to be productive? After all these years, you learn a lot about yourself once you get off the 8-5 merry-go-round.
You definitely still are a teacher, and many of us online are thankful for that. 🙂
Happy Monday Connie!
