Simple Action Habits: Embrace Them to Create a Life You Love
Marissa had dreamed of becoming a speaker since she was in high school. But she always told herself that she couldn’t pursue her dream because she was too shy. When she shared this with a friend, her bestie challenged her to look at the situation differently. “Maybe you are shy. But what if you focused on overcoming it? What if instead of believing that’s just the way you are, you took action?” It was the concept of “simple action habits” that made all the difference.
Habits Challenge You to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Then her friend encouraged her to create a habit that forced her to step out of her comfort zone. So Noelle decided to do 30 Facebook Live videos in 30 days.
Like Noelle, you may think of your personality as stuck or fixed. You might say, “I am who I am.” But what if you challenged that belief? What if you intentionally proved yourself wrong by starting a daily habit?
Habits help you challenge who you think you are. They give you space to grow and explore. As a result, you’ll be inspired to take new risks and discover your true identity.
Habits Help You Overcome Your Fears
As Noelle began building a community around her live videos, she met a woman who lived in another country. Vanessa wanted to write fiction books and share her writing with the world. But she was terrified that she wouldn’t be any good at it.
When Noelle heard Vanessa’s story, she encouraged to write one page a day. Vanessa followed Noelle’s advice and began writing. When she was done with the book, she edited it and sent it to a publishing house. Her work was accepted and she’s now on her way to becoming a published author.
The wonderful thing about habits is they give you a way to approach your fears. Because you’re taking one tiny step each day, you become accustomed to ignoring fear and taking action.
Habits Can Snowball into Success
Beth wanted to start an online business. She was a single mom and didn’t have great credit. She spent most of her time working just to keep the lights on. But she started focusing on saving $1 each week.
Pretty soon she was finding different ways to save money for her business. Within a few months, she was able to purchase the computer she needed to get started online.
It’s easy to overlook small things like saving a dollar or writing a page for your book. But don’t forget that big goals are just a series of simple habits. Like beads on a string come together to make a bracelet, so do small habits performed consistently.
Your habits matter—they determine how you spend your time, money, and energy. This means that starting new, healthy, simple action habits can help you create a life you love.

Somewhere in recent years, I’ve read about “micro habits.” I have a note on my bulletinboard, “What microhabit will you begin today?” Thanks for this post, Connie. It’s also consistent with James Clear’s book “Atomic Habits.” I often think about the really excellent piano teachers I had; following their practice routines was building “simple action habits” or microhabits.
