Finding Inner Peace in a Chaotic World
You may be wondering how inner peace for entrepreneurs is any different from any other segment of the population. From my perspective and based on my almost twenty years as an entrepreneur, I believe we are unique in many ways. I did not start out as an entrepreneur; I worked at several jobs before returning to school to earn a teaching credential at the age of 30. I also worked in real estate as a broker and residential appraiser, where I was considered to be an independent contractor.
As reported by the Positive Psychology website and other respected sources in the fields of psychology and neuroscience, inner peace can be defined as the following:
“A state of calm, serenity and tranquility of mind that arises due to having no sufferings or mental disturbances such as worry, anxiety, greed, desire, hatred, ill will, delusion and or other defilements.”
That might sound unachievable in today’s hectic, stressful, and chaotic world. The key to creating this positive mental and emotional state is to look inside, not out. Here are five practices proven to move you from distractions, chaos, anxiety, and stress towards a calmer, more peaceful state of being.
Embrace Positivity
Do what makes you smile. Keep things simple. Clear the clutter. Remove yourself from people and experiences that make you frown. Express gratitude for the things you enjoy that aren’t distracting and don’t require you to change your focus constantly.
Let the Sun Shine
You can create peace with just 15 to 20 minutes of sun exposure daily. The sun’s rays shining on your bare skin trigger the production of vitamin D and other processes that lower stress and increase feelings of happiness. Expose 60% of your skin to sunshine for the best benefits.
Live According to Your Values
What is important to you? Reflect on your most important beliefs. Begin living a life aligned with those beliefs. You enjoy more happiness and fulfillment mentally, emotionally, and even physically when you live according to your values.
Get Grounded, Literally
Grounding is physically connecting to the earth’s natural electric charge. Get your bare feet on the grass or in the dirt. This stabilizes the electrical circuit in your body, which reduces pain, inflammation, and mental and physical stress. You enjoy more natural energy, improved blood flow, and a peaceful mental state.
This creates inner peace by letting your body absorb millions of free electrons, which neutralize damaging free radicals in your body. You are a natural being, so when you physically connect with nature, peace, and focus improve while stress and anxiety are lowered.
Let Go of Past Trauma
Your past is full of wonderful memories. It’s nice to think about them from time to time. When you focus your entire existence on past events, good or bad, you rob yourself of the opportunity to live truly. The past is over, and the future will never exist except in your mind. Let go of past trauma. Face it, accept it, and move on. Live in “the now” for more positive feelings and emotions.
These five practices lead to a happier emotional place. They enhance your autonomy and your ability to dictate your behaviors and actions. That’s a great place to be emotionally and mentally. It leads to peace and happiness in a world that constantly threatens those wonderful states of being.
Solitude and Silence: Embracing the Quiet of Inner Peace for Entrepreneurs
Arthur Schopenhauer was an influential German philosopher of the early nineteenth century. He had views that were not always embraced by most of society. This is true of many great men and women in history. They bucked the establishment, introducing ideas that were controversial at the time.
Where emotional and mental freedom is concerned, Arthur had this to say…
“A man can be himself only so long as he is alone, and if he does not love solitude, he will not love freedom, for it is only when he is alone that he is really free.”
Embrace solitude. Learn to be happy with you and nothing else. Get to know who you are. Be happy with the face you see in the mirror. Be grateful for this life you have been given and every breath you can take because no one like you will ever be created again. You are a singular, important, and unique individual.
How a Quiet, Calm Environment Can Lead to Peace and Happiness
We live in the noisiest, most distracting, fastest, and busiest slice of human history. We have prioritized being constantly plugged in, turned on, and connected to the point that even our homeless have smartphones. Our world cherishes noise and constant sensory distractions. That’s not where inner peace lies and it certainly cannot be the model of inner peace for entrepreneurs.
Think about the times when you felt truly fulfilled and peaceful. You wanted for nothing. Your present moment was enough. Odds are, it was a simple experience. There wasn’t a lot going on. You weren’t thinking about the past or the future, and you felt like you didn’t have a care in the world.
You can return to that reality by finding a calm, distraction-free, quiet, and comfortable space to relax. Give yourself the gift of at least a half-hour of solitude and silence. Play some calming music if that helps you push away the nagging responsibilities of life. Don’t think about anything; push them away when distracting thoughts, sights, or sounds invade.
Just Be
Don’t judge who you are or the present moment you are in. Just exist. Let your senses make you aware of the moment you have been given. This is a freedom-embracing and empowering practice because you push away the world. There is only you and this infinitely small slice of time where your entire life is lived.
Try to schedule at least one of these sessions every day to get a fresh view of the world. Doing so will allow you to see that, as Schopenhauer said, you can’t be truly free until you embrace and enjoy solitude.
This personal freedom is available to you whenever you want to give this gift to yourself. Even when your mind and emotions are constantly assaulted with noise and influence, it leads to a calm state. You’ll experience less stress, more peacefulness, and a greater appreciation of the life and time you have been given.
