Why 2020 Cannot Be a Rerun of Last Year
A long time client was lamenting that her hopes for the New Year and decade were low. She expressed her feeling that 2020 would simply be a rerun of 2019. I told her it would not be possible and why 2020 cannot be a rerun of last year. This is the quote I shared with her before I continued…
“You can’t step in the same stream twice; the stream has changed and you have changed.”
Change is a natural part of life. I used to say that I did not adapt to change easily because my name, Connie means “constant, never changing” in Latin. I have since reframed my beliefs and welcome change on a daily basis. Change allows for growth and this growth can lead to enlightenment.
What will you do to enhance and assist change in your life this year? It’s up to you to write the story of your life from the inner recesses of your mind. Think of this new year of your life as a mostly blank canvas with you holding the brush and in control of the strokes.
Each year for the past decade I have started a new planner. This is a letter sized (8.5 x 11 inches) book with a hard cover and many detailed prompts inside. It begins with the instructions to write down three things each morning. These include:
- Today’s message to myself
- Today’s top 3 goals/priorities
- Tasks that absolutely must be done today
That’s my starting point when I first arise. It would be impossible for me to relive yesterday or to be stagnant in my thinking or actions today. Ten minutes later, after my warm water with fresh squeezed lemon my blood is flowing and my brain is in gear. At that moment I can hardly wait to see what I will map out for my accomplishments for the day.
I challenge you to grab hold of 2020 with both hands. Be open to leveling up when it comes to your energy, your enthusiasm, and your goals. Nothing is impossible when you give yourself permission to grow and excel. Your 2020 cannot be a rerun of last year. Can you see that now?
Now, let’s get back to my daily planner for a moment. There are thought provoking questions for me to ponder throughout the day. Here are a few:
- If one word could describe the kind of person I want to be today, that word would be…
- One action I could take today to demonstrate excellence or real value is…
- I would know that today was a great success if at the end of the day I did, said, or felt this…
We have passed the age of information and are now in the age of knowledge. Everything you want to know is available in a nanosecond. This is the time to grasp the knowledge that will catapult you to wherever it is you would like to be.
Each year I choose a word or words and a theme to guide me to the next level in my life and business. For 2020 I chose “vision” and “clarity” and my theme is “My perspective is clear and enhances my vision.” I would love to know what word and phrase you have chosen or to brainstorm some possibilities based on your goals.
Life is intended for living to the fullest. You define what that means and how it will unfold. Hold yourself in high esteem and expect your best self to emerge. Be willing to do the work and you will reap the benefits. Write down what you want as a part of your life experience and then chunk it down to get from where you are right now to closer to where you wish to be.
